Well looking foward to friday weather looks good,Mark fedrizzi and I are going to do a little float hunting in his canoe.Last week mark scored on a doe in her bed,Marks been doing this for a while and has it down the deer don't pay much mind.I'll try to get a bunch of pic's for you guy's on how the hunt go's as long as us two big guys can stay upright....ED
What poundage do you recommend for taking canoes? How big is a trophy canoe? Should you marinate it before you eat it?
Kyle
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Good luck to Ya'll Ed.Sounds like a cool way to hunt.We used to shoot squirrels with the .22 poleing a pirouge(cajun canoe)down the bayous and slews.
CB
Sounds good Ed...we were out this past wkend and had a blast...Scott scored. I'm hoping to get out there in the canoe soon...couple more weeks for some heavy movement...can't wait for the wknd!
Good luck guys!
Ed--I can't wait til Friday----and look out deer :bigsmyl:
Mark
I'll be awaiting some calls from the woods like last time...I know I'll be getting a call...good luck fellas
All this canoe hunting and I think I need to start a thread "Canoe hunt this Saturday..." whatcha think???
Come on wknd!
Good luck this wk end Brian...ED
Good Luck Guys...what did Scott get last weekend?? I must have missed it..or forgot about :knothead:
Hunting from a canoe is really a great experience. Have fun and remember to watch out that your bottom limb doesn't hit the gunnel when you shoot. :banghead: .... :D

Topic: Canoe Hunt Friday
I can! Canoe?
Just kidding! That sounds like an awesome way to hunt 'em.
Happy Huntin'!
TOMANO
Ron---it sure makes a helluva sound....kinda sends out a warning signal to the whole swamp......It still amazes me how (some of) the deer sometimes 'pause' for a brief second or two..seems to catch them slightly off guard--hopefully long enough to get one in the air..
Who make the canoe in your pic??? It looks sweet.

Good luck hunting,
Mark
Do you shoot from a seated or a standing position? If seated, any reason you couldn't shoot out of an open cockpit kayak. I'd guess you have to severely cant the bow(nearly horizontal...
Steve - I try to kneel as much as possible--gives me a pretty good platform and gets me above the sides a lot better...The shorter the bow the better...I am carrying a 56" longbow..
Mark
Good luck guys!! That actually sounds like a plan to me also.....might wait till Sat I,m not sure but the creek went up 3' from last Sat to last Sun and it,s been raining steady since.Almost crapped myself last Sun when I was sliding off the edge of the bank and running out of boot in the dark.Had ta use my LB as a stick to help pull myself up and out.....on to plan B lol
Nock em dead!!
What body of water are you guys floating? River, lake, creek? I've done the river runnin', its a blast, and some deer can be had this way!
make sure the canoe is a stable one with a wide bottom and a good keel!
I miss those early mornings on glassy water, steam rising..... I used to use my canoe to get to my favorite duck hunting waters. I gotta get another canoe.
Good Luck fellas, I'm sure you'll do well.
Curt,
Arrowed a nice fat doe on Saturday.
Scott, were you using a 2 or 3 blade head?
Congrats on the doe!
Bill
Good luck guys, sounds like a blast.
David
Scott D.-- we are hunting a creek bottom that runs through swamp, fields and hardwoods....it is about a 3 mile stretch with minimal houses which is a lot to say for considering it is about 70 miles NW of New York City....
Bill W..--I beleive Scott was using a 3 blade that ended up a 2 blade

(inside joke)
Mark
Now that is FUNNY!
Hot dog, another excuse to show my canoe hunt!
I love taking the canoe, there is no easier way to get a deer out of the woods. Didn't know they did it in New York tho.

Dave, thats a sweet pic hopefully we will have some tomorrow...ED
......Dave........Sweeett.....did you get him from the canoe???-------Mark
Mark, nope, it was a recovery the morning after.
I did shoot a large doe tho from the canoe later in the season. You have to lead like shooting a duck if the canoe is moving with the current or paddling, found that out.
Good luck guys. We expect a full report after the hunt. Man, football is killing me, wish I could be out there too.
Bill---you sound a like a teacher...LOL
I,m outta here at noon today.Gonna float the creek this afternoon and leave my canoe out there for the morning......got this doe back there thats picked me off twice by my entrance trail......next time I,m gonna float quietly thru the back door :)
Hope the other guys are doing well today
May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows
Good Luck Guys!!!!!!!
Happy Hunting!!! Chuck
Here's mark and I Heading out what a beautiful day. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/edoetzel/051027023256.jpg)
We seen one nice buck in the flooded timber but no shot, got two shots at a yote its tough shooting out of a canoe. If you never did this before you have to give it a try, theres something special about floating down a stream very relaxing. We stopped to stretch a bit and found some rubs you would not believe no doubt theres a nice one in there...ED (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/edoetzel/051027021300.jpg)
Some more pics (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/edoetzel/051027021300.jpg)

Ed--the pics look great---I still can't beleive some of those rubs .....
Had a great time..
Mark
Looks like a good time Guys. Tom the one canoe trip I took was behind your house. If you ever find my paddle, chair or lunch please return the paddle and chair.
Bob
How long is that canoe? Looks real short.
Dan----It is 11' 6".....
Wow, I guess it would work for hunting, but you'd have watch yourselves fishing.
If you each killed deer, it'd be tight in there!
What kind of canoe ?
................Raddison...
Yep (same one I talked about on a recent "Best Canoe" thread). When I bought mine, aprx. 15 years ago, the salesman told me, "It will carry two men, their gear, and a deer. If you both get a deer you have to dump the other guy." I used mine a lot for fly fishing in Maine & NH. They are so handy (only 35#) for one man handling. I also have used mine for hunting and to get to hunting spots. Great pics, friend.
Very Cool, glad you two had a great time!! Shawn
Good trip. I can shoot from the left side (I am right handed), killed my doe from the canoe and it is a 68" longbow!
I tried shooting a beaver from the right side once and could not get full draw plus hit the gunnel. I am too shaky to standup, plus water too deep and cold, ha.
Excellent pixs Ed!!!!!
Awesome pics is right Ed...me, Scott and Mark went down yesterday...it was AWESOME...I took a bit (slight understatement) of dunk starting out and it was still great ;) ...that area is just incredible. We saw a few deer, one likely good buck and one incredible buck...bedded in the water no less. We had flocks of turkeys (almost got a shot), coons, geese, ducks....man it was just awesome...can't wait to do it again.
Hey Scott...do I hear ***** noises from you??? Posting at 9:19a means you followed in my sissy footsteps...wonder how he did...sleep was good ;)
Later,
Brian
Brain, next time just stop up I have the same canoe be a little easier...LOL
Glad you guys had a good time!!
I ended up haveing to pull my canoe out of the water to go around fallen tree,s to often to make it likely to shoot a deer with a bow from it.I didn,t end up seeing any deer from the water however it was an enjoyable float even if it was a short one.
Bob,I got your lunch LOL the chair probably ran off with mine a couple yrs ago along with several other things swallowed up by the swamp
Ron, how'd you get the deer in the boat for the shot? I'd be afraid he'd squish my lunch.
Great pic by the way!
So you just float down and when a legal species presents it's self, you take the shot. That sounds great. I once shot at a hog while bowfishing. I have never seen deer this way. I figured they wouldn't be close enough to the water for a shot.
Check the regulations for your state. Some places it's not legal to hunt from a boat.
Yep, not leagal in NC from a moving boat. Has to be anchored or moored (I think it stems from waterfowl hunting precations).
Great stuff!!! :bigsmyl:
This is a good thread.
The large buck I referred to early was busted from the water...must have been bedded on a dry area or something...others are better at scoring so I won't guesstimate, all I can say is I would have been on the phone with the taxidermist as soon as my arrow was on the way ;)
So yeah...close to the water
The turkeys we saw were also in range from the water.
It was a blast going down the river last wknd...an awesome experience!!
I,m pretty sure but will double check but here in NY I think it just can,t have a motor on it.I,ll get back with that but Im pretty darn sure
Here it is right from the NYSDEC......
It is illegal to take or hunt wildlife:
* while in or on a motor vehicle (except by the holder of a Non Ambulatory Hunter Permit).
* with the aid of a vehicle's lights.
* on or from any public road.
* with any firearm equipped with a silencer.
* with any firearm which continues to fire as long as the trigger is held back (an automatic firearm).
* with any semi-automatic firearm with a capacity to hold more than 6 rounds, except:
o firearms using .22 or .17 caliber rimfire ammunition or,
o firearms altered to reduce their capacity to no more than 6 shells at one time in the magazine and chamber combined, or
o autoloading pistols with a barrel length of less than eight inches.
* with a spear.
* with a bow equipped with any mechanical device which is attached to the bow (other than the bowstring) for drawing, holding or releasing the bowstring except for a physically disabled person in possession of a Handicapped Archer Permit (compound bows are legal).
* with a spear gun or crossbow except for a physically disabled person in possession of a Modified Crossbow Permit.
* with an arrow with an explosive head or shaft.
* with any device designed or intended to deliver drugs to an animal
Nothin about useing a non motorized boat/canoe
I floated Black creek behind my house and there was to many blow downs to be productive,at least the section I was floating anyway, with a bow esspecially solo like I was doing.
Not sure where the other guys were but sounds like they had a better float than I.
PS canoe,s are more stable than many think, myself included......I swamped it on purpose over my head during the summer....they don,t tip as easy as you,d think.....less ofcourse the water is only 33 deg.s or so LOL
I agree, buddy, I fear their stability may be directly porportionate with the water temperature - LOL.
No explosive arrows or heads! somebody better Rambo know! I think he might be breaking the law..
Is there a Web-Site for Raddison ?
There is - a bigger company bought them up (or they branched out) I put it in that last canoe thread. let me see if I can find it here in my mess or dig it up again.
Here it is:
http://www.bwmarineproducts.com/canoes.htm
Interesting on the canoe company! Their 16' is 58#, my cedar strip 16' is 64# and I way over built it on the bottom with extra epoxy and thickened with graphite, also double 6oz cloth on the football bottom.
I bet you could make a cedar strip 16' to weight less than 50#.
That's a shocker - I would have thought those cedar strip canoes were much heavier - they are beautiful. I have the shorter Radisson and it is only 35#
