I need help!!! Everytime I try to build a bow with a big knot in the working limb, it is a disaster. I think I left plenty of wood around the knot, but I am having a terrible time getting the limb to bend in this spot. Should I drill out the center of the knot and reduce the mass there or what? I have'nt heard and noise from it yet either
Also there's a bigg whoop de doo right next to that :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Uglyosage001.jpg)
That is one character stave!! I bet you'll get a bow out of it
It might be a good idea to drill it out to help get it bending, but I have never worked with anything like that, so I wouldn't take my advice without a second opinion
Thats nasty Dano!!! Every one I've worked like that, I just tiller with it a bit stiff in that area...I'm sure someone here will come along with a better idea. A little more wood around it and ya coulda made a nice hole in the limb...peek a boo bow
Oh sure now ya tell me George :bigsmyl: I was planning on leaving it stiff too if I can get to survive.
That is a tough knot! You treated it as if it were not there, but it looks pretty solid and is probably harder thn the wood itself. Plus, with the grain riding up on the back, you need to hollow it on the belly to keep the thickness somewhat consistent. As it is, the area is twice as thick and twice as wide. That makes it 16x as strong as it surroundings. Not counting it being harder which only makes it worse.
Looks like you need to drill it out and go with the surrounding wood. I don't think you could trust it to stay put. Besides, thats the point of big knots like that right? Making the limbs with gaping holes.
Jeez is there that big a shortage of hedge over there in east IL? Poor feller.
Lennie, it's the challenge right? Yeah, I'm down to my last bit of wood :knothead: I'll hollow it out a little at a time and see what happens.
Dano,
I made a bow with a huge knot in the upper limb. After working it down to where it did some work it actually popped out of the limb. After that it was easier to tiller but all the mass in the upper limb gave it a bit of hand shock. Good luck with that.
Cody
you do under stand what Tom Wrote about being twice as wide being twice as strong drill it out because it is so hard that it will not bend anyway. being twice as thick is 8 times as strong and it wll never bend like the wood around it.
Dano......send it to Mickey!!
Now we can call ya knothead to your face and you'll think its because of this bow.
No Lennie, I'll know the truth :bigsmyl:
Anyhow, I drilled it out slowly to 7/16, kinda like tillering inside out, It seems to have helped.
Aint no such thing as "ugly" 'sage. Gnarly and even mean spirited, but not ugly. Have several with knots hanging around the place. If it's solid get as much bend in the area as feasible. If it's punky dig it out and you got a peep sight. Just leave plenty of wood to either side.
Keith
Dano would you post a pic of the "hollowed out" knot.
Please
Here's the back side, Slim (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Uglyosage006.jpg)
And the belly
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Uglyosage007.jpg)
Now Dano,
We got to talk about the title of this thread. I've looked at them pics of yours and I'm wondering where the UGLY is. Looks awefull cool looking to me.
BTW I got with Mike about the snake skins. He set me up thanks.
Thats great Jason, what skins did you decide on?
Now that's a beauty. :bigsmyl: My kind of bow wood. :wavey:
Dano, good luck. After seeing some of your bows I'm sure you can make it a shooter.
I've pretty much decided to just eliminate the big knots, go around them, and accept the bow that results. Even if the bow winds up more crooked you eliminate a lot of extra mass in the moving limb. That extra weight around the knot makes them shoot too harshly for my taste.
Thanks Linc and Steve, next time I make billets outa wood like this :D
Knots aren't bad,it's the woopdy doos that are a mutha.Makes tillering a nightmare. :knothead:
That's true Linc, you gotta look at the belly profile for the real angle, even swap it around on the tree to see the other side bend. Makes for some sweet dreams huh?
:D
Dano, I watching and learning. That bow is sure gonna be easy to hang up. I don't see where you are going to have so much extra mass in the limb, now that the knot is out you will just have simular amount of wood with a space in the middle.
"you will just have simular amount of wood with a space in the middle."
Shaun, hopefully the grain runs true in the remaining wood, It bends better and I've heard no ticks out of her. :D
Ohhh...now yer talkin ol' son. Thats a bow. I think she'll work :bigsmyl:
Thanks Pops :bigsmyl: She'll be fine.
Dano, i looks like there are rings around the knot hill on the back. ya didn't violate the rings going up the hill did ya?
Rusty
I thought that too Rusty.
Dano if you've got enough wood left I'd take the knot out.
I'm afraid I did Rusty, see what you think, is it doomed?
Dano got in late on this one but it looks like ya got it whupped. Good job
You can see them on the bottum right side of the knot.
Ohhhhh Dano that ain't good. here is a pic of a knot, not on a hill but ya can see the wood of the ring is contigoius around the knot and even going over the edge of the knot. I have a couple of bows that have hill knots if ya want to see them. I am afraid ya will pick a spliter up right there. around the knot yha work just like the rest of the back following one ring up the hill. then ya dig the center of the knot out till ya pick that ring that comes over the edge again. it's all one ring.
http://www.trashwoodbow.com/javie05/knothill.jpg
this bow has been shot alot. knot is still in perfect condition. one ring over the knot and thru the knot too the belly.
rusty
Thanks Rusty, I'll just have to start working around knots a lot slower, the rings were thin at that part of the knot and real easy to violate. Well if anything this stave has one good limb I can save for a billet.
Dano,Dano.....Tisk,tisk,tisk.....Why put yourself through such torment? LOL
I like her son,I hope she survives.
We all have to come up with a different way of nameing those "whooptidoos" I can never spell it right! BTW,what is the right spellin?
:bigsmyl: Timo, I love a good challenge. I hope it lives too. I bet Killie will be here to give us the correct spelling. ;)
well dano if yha do leave it a little stiff there she may hold together espically if she has thin rings it may shoot up a storm. it will be a place to watch.
rusty
:bigsmyl: Yeah I think I'll make it the lower limb so's it don't bust my knoggin.

ROFLMAO....Dano! I've heard a lot of reasons for 'flipping' limbs on a bow, but that's a new one for me!
Rather have my noggin busted than my.............

That's exactly what I was thinking.
Dano, could you wrap it with sinew for some insurance?
Clint
Dano,I think you will be fine as long as you keep the knot area a little stiff. If you do pull a splinter at least you know how to repair it.I don't think the limb will break at the knot with the amount of wood you have around the hole. :bigsmyl:
Just make her bend a little. She'll be fine. I think I would have left her in. Have fun!
Johnny "come lately" Sci-fries :bigsmyl: Now you tell me. We shall see today, it's time to make or break this bow, good thing I got a long tiller rope. ;)
Go Dano...Mac~
Thanks for the support guy's, I'm having a good time with this bow thats what it's all about.
Thanks for starting this thread and the pics. I have run into this situation twice in my short bow building time. I would have never thought to drill it out.
Thanks again
Dano,
Man that bow will be cool.
BTW
I went with some small diamondbacks he suggested. He suggested them because with one longer one I'd loose the pattern on the narrow bow. I called him and we talked about it for a minute. Can't wait to get them. I have this picture in my head of what this bow will look like when its done. I'm ready to get to it.
Slim, this wasn't my idea, I've heard it done before, thought it might be worth a try. So far so good.
That's great Jason, Mike will set you up that's for sure. I can't wait to see how it turns out buddy.
ok pal...hows the tiller comin? lets have some photos. Going to be a cool bow.
Geeze, a guy never gets any rest. :bigsmyl:
Braced, doesn't look real bad, keep in mind that whoop de doo is causing the limb to twist upward at mid limb.
Here it is drawn 13", pretty stiff at the knot and whoop de doo.
lookin good, hows that wood around the knot? A little hard?
George, I've gone in and dug out most of the real brittle stuff, the wood around the knot seams ok, still trying to get it bending better right there.
Look a little stiff. I've found,in my limited experience, that area will always be a bit hard to bend...even the wood around the knot is a wee bit harder than the rest if for no other reason that it's changing direction to swirle around the knot.I think when ya bring the tiller home it will still look a little like its not bending enough there...thats ok.
Yeah, that swirl of fibers around the hole, certainly makes for an odd situation as far as bending. and you almost have to hollow out the belly side, to make the knot wood the same thickness as the rest of the limb. And even then, the cone shape would probably be stiffer.
The whoop-tee-doo is simpel compared to the knot. And its no walk in the park either.
Go for it Dano. Show no mercy! I wanna see this sucker bend through that knot.
depending on the width and depth of the knot hole from the belly side there may not be enough wood left on the back side to provide enough strength if you get it thin enough to bend which is what caused this. The knot hole was cone shaped and didn't leave enough supporting wood on the back.
Dang Mickey don't show me pictures like that right now :bigsmyl:
Lennie, your right and I am treating the wood around the knot with care. The whoop de doo just takes a little finece to tiller. Here's a picture of the knot now and it drawn to 16"
LOL sorry Dano :knothead:
You have that knot cleaned out real well, are we looking at the back or belly in that pic?
Yeah Mickey, I scrolled down and saw that and thought, well Dano has the rest of the day off if he isn't in the emergency room. But then saw it wasn't his knot.
:D Just kiddin Mickey. Ooops sorry, that's the back.
Lookin good buddy.Gonna be a shooter yet. :bigsmyl:
Thanks Linc, I think so too, I gotta let it set for today, this ol boy is tired. :bigsmyl:
Bitch getting old, ain't it? :bigsmyl: I get tired just watching your build-a-long.
It's a pain fur sure as you know buddy. This bow has been fun, we'll see if this old fart can get it to shoot tomorrow. :D
:wavey:
Linc, you've been laggin, what's up buddy?
Oh man Dano ya crazy?? :) . I always wait till Wingnutty comes over and say "Hey Wingnut shoot my bow!!!" heeee heeee .
I just don't tell him I ain't never shot it and scared to! :)
rusty
Rusty, I've got a friend here in town that makes glass bows, I save the real fun bows for him. "Hey buddy shoot this baby!!"
ooooo...thats pretty Dano, good job. You da man
Now, like Rusty said, if ya can bamboozle someone ta drive her on her maiden voyage......
Dano
Very nice looking! :) Planning on backing that with anything...?
-frankb
Thanks George, but I think I'll drive this baby on her maiden voyage, oh wait here comes my wife I'll get her to draw it back   :bigsmyl:
Thanks Frank, no I think I'll leave it bare.
I think the wife will figure "something's up" when you hand her the bow and back off about 10 paces... don't you :D
-frankb
Yeah your prolly right, she is purty smart. :bigsmyl:
You're success so far has restored my faith in a stave that I have. Now all I need is faith in myself and a whole lot of help from the gang. Keep them pics coming.
Clint
dano, dano he's our man, if he can't do it no one can. gggooooo dano! :scared: that babies gonna be a sweetie. mick, i heard that one snap all the way over here!....LOL great thread...
davewhotriestopickstraighttamestickstoworkon
Dave, there is no way in Haides that I'm going to picture you in a skirt or a tight sweater, there's just somethings I can't do :bigsmyl:
Come on Clint, follow Rusty's advice on chasing a ring around the knots and your home free.
Dano, hurry up and get the honeydo list finished so you can get back to this bow. Satuday is a good day to work on bows. At 200 miles as the crow flies, I think I'm safe, so go ahead and pull that thing back.
no, that's not either or, it's both together.... :help: kinda helps ya keep your mind offa your knot hole....deb says you should make a bird house out of it...nice little wren opening.....

That's close enough to ride down there, get some hands on instruction with one of the respected, and come back home with a big 'ole bruise on you noggin. :D
Clint
Yeah, come on Shaun, there's nothin to be afraid of :D I've got one more Honeydo, and I'll get this puppy shootin.
Thanks Dave, tell Deb that's a great idea, KNOT!!! :bigsmyl:
Man, this is slow goin, I've got it tillered to 22" and I think I the outer 1/3 of each limb is still a little stiff. To me they look pretty even, so I may just scrap a little more and call it good. What do ya'all think?
This will be the top limb now.
You can see the troblesome limb has taken on a little set, oh well.
Lookin good Dano. think you could take off whats needed on that outer 1/3 in the final sanding
Lookin good to me Dano. Did you bend the tips or are they naturally like that?
Clint
Dano, great post, great bow, great work! Will help me with my projects.
Thanks Guy's, George I think your right.
Clint, I had to match the ugly end. :D
A little movement outside the knot, and the other side in the outer third. Lookin' good. I admit, I keep coming to this thread to see if you've blown her up yet. This has been an exciting buildalong.
Thanks Lennie, I plan on working the limbs a little more tomorrow, it could still blow up stay tuned  :bigsmyl:
Dano ole buddy,if'n you're scared to draw it then send it to me.I ain't right in the head anyway.I've had lots of bows blow in my hands and haven't gotten hurt yet.Only one has been a selfbow, all the rest were compounds.LOL.Guess that goes to show which is a superior bow design. :bigsmyl:
Buddy, we know which is the superior bow don't we. This bow don't scare me anymore
:bigsmyl:
Now if I can find more time to work on my stave,I'll be a lot happier.
I got a good feeling about this bow
she's gonna make it!!
OK ya'all this ain't the snappiest bow I've made, but it's kinda cool to get it to this point. Here it's drawn to 26"
Same draw length reversed
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Uglyosage018.jpg)
unbraced
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/Archery/Bows/Uglyosage020.jpg)
Now a little more shootin, and some Thunderbird.
Good job Dano. That was a difficult piece of wood. Make a straight piece knot free piece of wood seem like childs play doesn't it?
 :notworthy:
Thank ya Mickey, Yeah kids stuff. This has been a real lesson, and kinda fun.
Sweet... See not an ugly peice of wood. LOL Just Challenging. \\\\
Good Job. I like it.
You done good gettin her bending. Looks like two different bows in the two pics, that whoopdedoo really changes the look of the bend. Great job, even if it was kinda boring compared to a good explosion.
Lennie, I know it was kinda nice of Mickey to show us how it could have gone. But you know before I get any bragging rights this bow has to last longer than his did. :D
Ya did good buddy. :bigsmyl: I knew you could do it. :wavey:
Thanks for your faith Linc. Now what the heck have you been up to?
That's the ugliest thing I ever seen Dano. I like it. ;-) Great job!
Dang, I went back and looked at all the other pages I figured out I missed the whole build. Nice job dealing with that big knot. I was afraid that one was gonna get you when I first swaw it. Looks it's gonna hold.
David thank you, I just thought you were mad about that comment I made on your post about your new chronograph, you know the gram scale from your college daze, but I knew better. :bigsmyl:
sweet dano, i'm gonna email ya a pic of yer next project. i post it up but don't have a clue how....can't wait to see this one in person!
Thanks Nick and Dave, I almost have your last project done good timing buddy.
Dano, I am impressed with ya bud! Wasn't sure about that knot. But I see that you have her taimed.Good job!It was a good buildalong.I have a few of those kind of staves.I guess I need to build a few...Eh?
You sure are gonna be busy showin bows at Mojam this year?
Timo you my friend have built some dandy's yourself, I look forward to seeing your work as well. :notworthy: :D
Dano,I'm slowly working on a minimally character laden osage.64" NTN 4" handle 2" fades.1 3/8" tapering down to 1/2" tips.I guess you would call it a pyramid style. No knots or pins to speak of,has some side to side wave and a little prop twist. One little whoopdy doo that is like a step down.Getting ready to put on the short string.
Way to pull it off Dano. I just cut a lot of excess wood of mine with a band saw yesterday, and with a little luck, maybe she'll turn out half as good lookin as yours.
Clint
Whew, now THAT is a snaky bow. Great Job!
-Brian
Nice job Dan!
Thanks guy's, Linc, Clint we expect pitures. Check out this nice tree Dosbow56 spotted, there might be a bow there somewhere. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v199/dlgren/twisted.jpg) :bigsmyl:
Oh Dano look at that Barber pole in the bark onm that main trunk. Tree been subjected to a lot of wind twist. Maybe a branch has straight bark. Were it me, unless you LIKED making bows from wood like you just worked I'd find another tree.
Yep, I've seen that tree a hundert times.
Me mad Dano? No way buddy. It's cool. What was odd was that the quote disappeared when I edited my post. I'd be surprised if they write that stuff by reference by I guess so.
:bigsmyl: I noticed the same thing. "Charter Members" are supposed to be respectable you know. Thank Goodness someone's lookin out for us.
Dano, good job and an interesting build along. Would it be possible to fasten a small turkey whistle in the hole? Bue--.
Thanks Bue, you know I could probably get a whistle in the hole, My bow would cherp every time I shot. :D
Opps Dano just edited your message above with my message (the one with the tree pic)..sorry got my dang moderators finger in the wrong hole :knothead:
:bigsmyl: Mickey, I think Dosbow was just ribbin me with that picture, I would pass that tree up as well, there has to be better osage than that up there in northern Illinois. Dang you moderators get all the cool buttons.
Dano,,,Great build-a-long! and at just the right time, I've got a bow started now that has a large knot like that in both limbs. Actually I laid it out that way. It's made from two billets that were split one from on top of the other. Same branch growing thru each billet, I laid out the bow pattern from the center of knot on each limb. Should have a stiff spot in the same area of each limb. I hope to get started on the tillering this coming weekend. You & DCM are my inspiration on this one. Congrats again on such a challenge.
Dag gone 'Big Brother' interfering with people's posts again this time in the form of a Ferret

Brian I'm kinda low tech and these dang computers just have too many buttons on them sometimes :knothead: One wrong "enter" and you've altered, deleted, edited the wrong thing ha ha. Sometimes I stare at the screen and go "ok, what did I just do?" LOL
bad idea giving control of a high tech medium to a low tech guy
You know I forgive ya Mickey :D
Flatstick, keep us posted sounds like a pretty good challenge there.
LMAO Mickey!
-Brian
Good job Dano. I can tell ya from expirence 'em are the kinda bows that wait patiently till they got ya feeling all warm and cozy......then they jump ya from behind....tick tick tick tick ......
heeee heeeee "IED's" i tell ya (Improvised Explosive Device) :)
rusty -got time bombs just a wait'n for me- Craine
