Title: broken arm
Post by: bolong on March 17, 2013, 05:15:00 PM
I recently sustained a radial head fracture on my right arm. I have to have surgery next week and was wondering if any fellow Tradgangers had been thru this. It is the head of the radius bone next to the elbow. Ishoot right handed. This is the first time since I started shooting a bow 55 years ago that I couldn't shoot and it's killing me.

I've been told by others it's a long process getting back close to normal and just pray it all works and I will be able to shoot again.

I have not had the surgery but I have helped do them many times. I have done a lot of Ortho during my time in the O.R. I take it your fracuture is stable and there is no compromised blood supply or nerve damage. If you are having plates and screws you should be okay. They have special plates these days with a clover leaf shape to fit these areas. As I said if the only issue is the fracture and no vascular, nerve or tendon damage the recovery should be okay. The problem is sometimes if the fracture is through the head you could develop arthritis in the joint. These fractures can be distal to the head and that is a little better. Either way when you deal with a joint in your body you can always have problems. If that head is not shattered it is very unlikely they would relace the head. I wish you luck. This is not medical advice just giving my input based on my experience assisting in these cases.

Feel for you bolong. I completely blew out my left bicep this past summer on memorial day loading my canoe. It was a sound that I will never forget. They had to reattach it with a screw.
Listen to your Doctor and follow his rehab program. I was back to shooting by that sept.

Sorry to hear! Not being able to shoot would kill me too! Follow the Dr's orders and rehab it good and you will be good as new. I sure hope it does not take too long though.
