Title: Date my Kodiak Special
Post by: Kingstaken on January 19, 2015, 04:47:00 PM
Can anyone date this Kodiak Special. Custom made from what I see being it is 70" 46#@30"

# is:
 A
XY991

Bow is in beautiful condition.

Someone had mentioned maybe a 58 11/2  or 59 1/2 because it had riser materials left over from the previous year.

I believe it's a '57 based on the KS thread I pulled up for you.

Thank you.

Can anyone tell me what the serial #'s mean?  The "A" is actually over the two 9's.

Does anyone have the sales accounting book (yah rite Jim     )  as I'd like to see who custom ordered this bow. I doubt Bear made a 70" 46# @ 30" as a stock bow even for a right hand.

I agree on the 1957 and the A is generally taken to be the initial of the inspector for that bow.
Only 66" was stock for that model all the rest were 'custom order'. I have that bow, KS 1957, in 52# @28. It shoots exceptionally quick with those long limbs.

Bjorn -

Your statement quoted above is very confusing to me. The 1957 Bear Catalog page 5 features the Kodiak Special and states nothing about "Only 66" was stock for that model..."

Actually the lengths stated in the 1957 Bear Catalog page 5 are 62", 64", 66", 70".

As you and I both know, the 68" was not mentioned on page 5 of this catalog, but was actually produced.

The catalog states "Note: All bow weights are marked at 28" draw; when ordering allow 2 lbs. for each inch your draw is under (or over) 28"..."

As a side note, I have all 5 lengths of the 1957 Kodiak Special, 62", 64", 66", 68", 70" and each is marked only with the weight, not the draw length.

Wouldn't that lead you to believe that these 5 lengths were all stock bows?

Incidentally, the "A" mark appears above the serial number on all of these five length bows, except the 70", which unlike Jim's 70", has nothing at all above the serial number.

I'm certain you have a valid reason for stating "Only 66" was stock", please enlighten those of us who have never heard (or can't remember ever hearing) this before...
