Title: Starting over with a Trad Recurve- Howatt Eldorado Palomar
Post by: BE Wild Willy on November 16, 2013, 06:51:00 PM
I'd recently made the decision to get back into archery after over 30 years. I wanted to start out at a lower poundage so that I can work on form and shoot more arrows without fatigue or potential shoulder issues. Found this old Howatt and I'm gonna need some advice from the Gang to get set up. I will go to the local archery shop on Monday to get a new string, arrows, etc. What can any of you tell me about this bow. Serial # EDP-24776. Here's some pics too.

Welcome!
Great to have you here!  That's a beauty of a bow.  I am not a Howatt expert but there are a few here.

It may take them a few days to see this post though.  I hope they are along soon.

What is the weight on it?  Do you have arrows?  If not, do you know what kind of arrow material you want (wood, aluminum, carbon)?

Glad you are back I traditional

My guess is that is an early '60's bow.  Take care of it as it should have some collectors value to it.

38# is a good place to start, and Damon Howatt bows are top notch.

Enjoy it and welcome aboard.

There are no other markings other than what is shown in the pic of the riser. No stickers on the limbs with no indication that any were there (residue, outline, etc.)

Planning on shooting carbons with woodgrain finish for durability's sake.

love the laminations on that bow! 38# would be the draw weight. I'm guessing a 66" bow?

The bow measures close to 70" nock to nock following the radius at the end of the limbs.

Thanks for the link HT, had seen it while researching the bow prior to purchasing. Received a message from Larry Hatfield over on the LW. He thinks that it's probably a '57 made by Jim Hook Bowyer #2 at Howatt. Can't wait to get her strung and some arrows fitted.

Not yet as I'm still waiting on a new string that I ordered. Then it's off to the local shop to get some arrows fitted. Sometime next week I should be able to give her a try, can't wait.

Just wanted to finally follow up and let you guys know that my old Howatt is a wonderful shooter. With 1816s and a new flemish string it has inspired me to shoot.

Here's a couple pics. Pumpkin @ 20yds. and Cig pack from and elevated positions @ 25yds. BTW, I have since removed the Merrill sight from the bow.
