Title: Shooting issues. I THINK eye related.
Post by: ChuckC on April 03, 2017, 09:19:00 PM
I switched to lefty a few years ago, the result of long term, almost debilitating target panic shooting rightie.  My eye dominance is weird, almost transient.

I find lately, like, this year, that i am hitting right of my target (instinctive, but definitely see the arrow and my hand).

A couple days ago i started closing my right eye when nearing full draw and thru the brief "aim" period (very brief).  I find that when i do that i tend to hit the target, or even a bit left.

There are days i am right on with both eyes open and i blink and i start hitting right.   I blamed it on bad releases and marginally correct spine (arrow spine), but closing that eye seems to change it.

It is not comfortable closing the eye (just wierd is all).  Anybody else face this issue ?   Any ideas ?

I think because of your cross-dominance, you should always close your non-aiming eye just before you make your final aiming adjustments.  You are seeing two images of the arrow, and this will ensure that you are using the image of the arrow under your aiming eye, whether for instinctive or reference aiming purposes.  You might find it instructive to watch Larry Yien's section of Masters of the Bare Bow, vol 3, where he discusses his need to do this.  I'm not sure what else you could do if you're not certain which eye is dominant at any given time.

Instead of closing the eye that is not over the arrow, you could try squinting it.  I think that's what Larry Yien said in the video that he does.  Squinting might be enough to shift dominance to the eye over the arrow, without completely losing your binocular view of the target.

Squinting my non aiming eye just a bit has helped me shoot my best. I am right eye dominant BUT I also have a very bad astigmatism in that same eye so I think that's where some of my co dominant eye struggles comes from. The left eye is fighting to help correct the problem in my dominant right eye. Try squinting
