Title: Hey gap shooter, Is anyone shooting a fixed crawl?
Post by: longbow fanatic 1 on March 15, 2015, 05:50:00 PM
I'm going to be messing with shooting a fixed crawl. Anyone else doing this?

Jimmy is very helpful. I hope to meet him someday down the road.    :archer:

I used string walking this last deer season, worked great for me. I tied markers below my string nocks from 15 - 35 yards in five yard increments. May sound complicated but once you try it it is very easy. Without string walking my point on range is 40 yards so at 20 yards I was holding way below the target. The string walking has totally fixed second guessing on where to hold.

I've been using a 20 yard fixed crawl for my hunting rigs for a while.  It reduces the gaps considerably.  Deadly poison for hunting situations from 0 to 30 yards.  :^)

I can gap all day long on the 3d range but when there is a deer in front of me I need something I'm more confident in.

I use a 20 yard fixed crawl for hunting. I just put my arrow where I want it to go and execute my shot. I

Very interesting guys! I shot with a fixed crawl yesterday and man is that great! Put the point on, execute the shot and voila!

Basically it's stringwalking for one known distance, but if it works for you it can be a very effective hunting method at normal ranges. I've played around with it a bit using my normal 3U/high anchor, but had more luck at reducing gaps with a high nock sets as demonstrated in Dewayne Martin's videos. Also, I naturally cant and gripping the string 3/4" below the nock just seems to take the shaft further out from under my eye.  There seems to be significant downward force exerted on the arrow by s-walking, as it works essentially by mistiming the limbs.  Jimmy told me true walking is hard to do off the shelf without an elevated rest, but alot of folks have relatively small fixed crawls and it works okay for them.  Folks who walk seem to overwhelmingly prefer "springy" type rests.

This system does work!  However, if you shoot at a Traditional 3-D shoot many clubs have outlawed it's practice.  They insist that a finger touches the arrow shaft at all times.  Just check with your club(s) to see what's legal.

Pardon my ignorance guys. But I too messed with this a little. Bow got louder. Not bad though. But by the time it's done you are just using the point of the arrow as a sight. I think I'd rather just put a sight pin on my bow. I'm only talking about hunting situations though. Not shooting competitions. I've considered putting a single pin on my bow for hunting just for this reason. Even after all these years of doing it I struggle to pick a spot on a critter when in the heat of the moment.

I started string walking about a month or so ago after watching a friend use this method.  It has made me crazy accurate out to 35 yards.  I worked at it  on the range for awhile before taking it to the 3D course.  Results were equally good on the 3D range.  I'll definitely be shooting this way come fall.  I tried instinctively shooting at longer ranges and it just didn't work for me.  But I have found the fixed craw is great for those close shots also.  I shot two ground hogs last week at around 10 yards by just placing the point on the chest.  I have found that if you do not have good repeatable form it won't work well.

Jon, with a sight I must keep the bow verticle, fixed crawl I can shoot verticle or canted.

20yd fixed crawl here, gap shorter or longer distances.

I have found that it is similar to a sight that it forces you to have great form to be consistent. It has proven excellent off season practice for form and plan to hunt with it this year.

I'm going to try this and see how it works for me.

Jon, I have the same problem as you. A couple of weeks ago we had Rod Jenkins put on a clinic and as soon as I'm done with my 3 weeks of form drills, I'm going to try a fixed crawl and see how it works for me.

From what I read, I will need to use longer arrows so I can keep the crawl distance shorter.

Thanks for the info guys. I hadn't thought about the bow cant thing I guess because I shoot with a vertical bow. Interesting stuff.
