Title: Stippled/ Carved Grip
Post by: michbowhunter on June 25, 2011, 04:52:00 PM
This is a bow I am finishing up for a buddy of mine.  A few guys asked me how I did the stippling on the grip, so I took a few pics as I did this one.  This one has a little more carving into it than I usually do, but still came out well.
I like to tape around the area I am going to be doing...you can just draw it out with pencil also.  Seems like I just do better with the tape!  The riser is finished sanded to 180 grit when I start, when I am done i go over the whole thing with 220.
He wanted a Elk Antler in the handle, so I drew it out on the tape and cut it out with the knife.
All of the work is done with a Dremel.

I use the smaller of the two bits to carve a line around the antler and the larger to make the stipples.

After i get all the stippling done, I go back with this bit (not sure what it is called, but you can see it in the pic) and blend all the stipples together...kind of in a swirling motion.

I like the way this comes out, kind of looks a feels like the base of an antler...about the only thing I can compare it to.  ;)
After that, I finish carving a little deeper around the antler and then go over the whole thing with 220 grit paper.

This is how it looks now with a coat of semi-gloss Krystal...with that figured Bocote, it is hard to see the outline of the carving.  It should look better once it is finished up with the Flat Krystal.

Well, here is the finished bow.  I still can't get a decent photo that shows the grip all that well.  The flat finish does help bring it out a bit.
Thanks for all the complements guys!

Good job....wish it had been posted a few weeks earlier.  I just did one of mine and didn't think of putting the design in, like the antlers.  Really looks sharp.

How is stippling for making the grip less slippery ?  Trying to decide between that and checkering

Inspirational.  I have been thinking of adjusting a handle I have.  might try some stippling, though I don't think it will look anywhere as nice as yours.  Beautiful

ChuckC,

Mileage may vary, but I've had chances to shoot checkered grips and found them to be somewhat abrasive over time... sweaty palms, etc.

I had my latest stippled and now after a number of months, varied weather, with and without gloves, I'm loving the stippling.

But then I don't lay block or other work that creates calluses like some guys... fwiw.

Jarred,

That is some incredible work... getting pics to come out on such detail can be tough... but it surely is quite impressive! Nicely done!

I love it Jared!  Only a carpenter would carve on a bow grip with a sheet rock knife.

I've done several of these now and it gets easier as you do more of them. i haven't tried a carving yet on a bow grip....   nicely done bro.

Nice Jared

Let me tell you guys Jared was in KS with us last year and brought some of his bows - that man knows how to build bows that shoot!!!  We shot them all week and they were quick quiet and very comfortable in hand!!!!
