I offered to make a knife as a prize for a turkey contest so I started it today. This will be a drop point blade. I am using a saw blade. Stamped into the blade was "Made in Norway" so I feel good about the steel it made from.

After roughing out the blade, I softened the handle so I can drill holes for the brass pins.

Then I cleaned up the edges and polished the blade.

After sharpening the blade, I drilled the pin holes.

For the handle, I am thinking of using walnut and antler or bone.
For the knife handle, I will use antler and walnut. I cut apart a small rack to make the sides.

I used J.B. weld epoxy to attach the antler to the walnut sides and then drilled the holes for the brass pins.

I also use J.B. weld to attach the sides to the tang and in the pin holes. The pins are a tight fit that get pounded together.

The sides are over sized and will be sanded to shape after the epoxy sets.
Lookin good, cant wait to see this one finished!

What kind of saw blade is that?
Pruning saw, if I'm not mistaken.
Agree with all of the above - very nice indeed.

I'm new to this, How did you cut the blade out??
It looks great and I'd like to give it a try.
With a Dremmel tool and small diameter high speed cut off wheels.
Lookin good :0)

"Softened the blade for the handle"? What does this mean and how is it accomplished?

I had time to sand down the handle a bit tonight. I will use tung oil as the finish.

You're killin' me! That thing looks awesome! Hey, I just had an idea! I work for a landscape company and my boss has been whinning for a helle knife. Maybe I can take an old pruning blade(we have alot of them laying around)and make him a knife like that one. Thanks for the motivation and instructions. Mike

Thanks for sharing.........
WOW!! you do have some skills. Nice job!
nice looking........this thread gave me some idea's on my next knife.........thanks
All Right! Nice job. Got me thinking about what I can do with a worn out saw blade. Now where can I find some time.
quick question: are you using a dremmel to cut out the blade? and what kind of eye protection do you need to wear. i've never played with metal but i'd like to give it a try. and how do you shape the handle....
thanks for the build along, it is a gorgeous knife!!
Dremel makes a Diamond Cut Off Wheel as well, thats what I would Use anyway.
Good Set of Safety Glasses with sides Covered too Green Arrow!! The Wrap around kind work Really well.
Eye protection??? Now look, I have something in my eye. ;) I wear safety glasses and sometimes a full face shield with them.

RGK what are the deminsions on this beaut? do you have a pattern that you used or was this one you just drew up? i think my pole saw could use a new blade :bigsmyl:
Man that is one sweet knife.
Very Nice
That is one fine piece of work--one question--What is tung oil?
Paleface. It was just something I sketched up to fit the blade.
With the knife done. I am going to start another build along for the leather sheath. Stay tuned.
WOW! Nice work. Would you mind telling how you worked the handle down?
appreciate it, i have started my 1st knife thanks to this thread. good thing i don't have an addictive personality :help: i think i can get at least 3 and maybe 4 out of this old saw blade.
How do you polish the blade up? It looked pretty beat before, is it all hand sanding or do you attack it with some kind of power tool?
Did this blade need to be heat treated and tempered?
Very nice!!
I am sure you will be satisfied with the quality of the blade.
My grandfather used the same steel to cut gras on his farm.
Different shape of course.
Inge
I use a belt sander to remove material from the handle.
The blade is very hard without heat treating.
Yes i guess it is hard, but i think it is easy to sharpen.
I think that many of the huntingknives are to hard so i find them diffecult to sharpen.
I like the old ones.
You are making a beautiful knife!!
